Venezuela: Women in Prison and wider Human Rights Violations

For almost three years, the International Amnesty group focused on human rights violations against women, has been following the individual case of Emirlendris Benítez. She was arbitrarily detained in 2018 and suffered multiple human rights violations in detention, including torture, gender-based violence and an unfair trial. On August 14, 2026, she was released as a “humanitarian measure,” but she must report to a court every three months, and the unjust verdict against her remains in effect. Our work on her case served as the starting point for this event.
Together with experts on Venezuela, we want to talk about the human rights situation of women in Venezuelan prisons and the wider human rights situation in the country.
